Manly attractions & experiences
Surf beach, sheltered coves, harbour walks and headland views. Follow the coastline that calls to you.
Find your beach
The long oceanfront has different beach sections and changing surf conditions.
Enjoy the sand, promenade and pine-lined foreshore. For swimming, find the current red and yellow flags and follow lifeguard directions.
Walk north for another perspective of the beachfront. Surf, rips and patrol positions vary; do not choose a swimming spot by appearance alone.
Manly Cove and nearby harbour pockets offer a different setting from the surf beach. Sheltered water still has risks: check signs, water quality and vessel activity.
Shelly Beach & Cabbage Tree Bay
Follow Marine Parade from South Manly past Fairy Bower toward Shelly Beach, where a small cove sits inside Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve.
In suitable conditions, the bay is popular for snorkelling, diving and swimming. Visibility, surge and currents change; use a qualified guide if you are unfamiliar with the area.
This is a protected no-take reserve. Do not fish, collect marine life or disturb habitat. Give wildlife space and keep fins clear of the bottom.

Walk your kind of coastline
Check closures and choose a route that fits your time and ability.
A scenic foreshore walk via Marine Parade and Fairy Bower. Allow time for views and breaks, and check access after storms or major surf.
A longer harbour-side walk through bushland, coves and residential sections. The commonly followed route is about 10 kilometres, with steps and uneven surfaces. Plan transport to the start.
A flexible way to enjoy the oceanfront without committing to a bushwalk. Choose a short out-and-back, pause at a café and keep an eye on shared-path activity.
North Head
Trade the village for coastal heath, sandstone cliffs and harbour views at North Head.
The Fairfax walk is a one-kilometre loop around the lookout area. It is a short walk once you are there; reaching North Head from the village is a separate journey.
Check park alerts, accessibility information, fire warnings and opening arrangements. Stay behind barriers and protect the headland’s wildlife.

Culture, water & family days
Choose activities around conditions, age and comfort in the water.
Visit Manly Art Gallery & Museum on the harbour side for its current exhibition program and a different perspective on beach culture. See the gallery program ↗
Explore a guided kayak experience on the harbour side or a surf lesson at an appropriate beach. Confirm age, swimming ability, equipment and weather policies with the operator.
Combine a ferry arrival, village browsing and a foreshore picnic. Keep children supervised near water, roads and cliff edges; check the location of toilets and shade.
Beyond Manly
These are separate outings; allow for the journey and check local access.
Discover nearby Freshwater’s surfing heritage or head farther north to other Northern Beaches centres. Each beach has different conditions and services.
Explore a different natural setting inland, with bushland and recreation areas. Check permitted activities, access and current notices before visiting.
Use Manly as a base for a ferry-linked city day. Explore Circular Quay, the harbour foreshore and central Sydney, then return for a beachside evening.
